Grimsby's Barmy Army!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/02/2004

WITH one of the largest away crowds in recent years, followers of the Mariners will be there in force on Sunday at Boundary Park when Town play Oldham.

It will be a special day for the Mariners with so many fans travelling to Lancashire. It is also a very special day for Oldham too with every fan, both home and away, gaining free admission as Oldham's way of thanking the fans for their assistance in getting the club back on its feet when it looked like going into liquidation.

So with a 'sold out' notice on the gate it is crucial that the Mariner's fans are not outsung, out chanted and drowned out by the support of the opposition.

Each game that Town play from now on is a critical game. Hovering around the bottom of the table with a gilt edged invitation to the Relegation Ball, Town need to turn things round and start getting back into winning ways. (How long ago was that?)

It is essential therefore that the Grimsby fans live for the day and forget the problems we have, and to act instead as Groves's 'twelfth man'. He has often stated that the Town crowd behind the team is like having an extra player on the field and there has never been a greater need for Town to have 12 players.

This is also not the time for fans to 'wash their dirty linen in public'. Berating the players and manager at an away ground will bring nothing but shame. It certainly won't change anything!

Town fans have an opportunity to make this a great day and their full support of the whole squad can make a difference and with so many going on Sunday, it can make a big difference!!

So good luck to all those travelling to Oldham! Get the Grimsby choir in full song and sing long and loud for your team . Make it a really great day for us all!
