The Fishy - Grimsby Town FC

Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Ashamed to be a Town Fan

WE have suffered terrible times over the past four to five seasons, including two relegations. I for one got quite used to going to away games at Wolves, Ipswich, Norwich, Sunderland to name just a few.

However, for me, the grim reality of how far we have sunk, and the new levels of despair happened at 4.45pm on Saturday. To get well beaten by a team like Scunthorpe, and humiliated in such a way was almost to much to take as a loyal Town fan. Is this our future ? Is this what we have become ? More importantly, is there going to ever be an end to this current level of despair ?

Yet the strange thing that I cannot get my head around is the fact that if we had approached the Scunthorpe game, like we approached the first six or seven games of the season, we would probably have beaten them out of sight. How can such a transformation take place so quickly.

I now totally believe that although he talks a good game, Slade can offer us no more than Groves or Nicky Law did. Slade has no real grasp of tactics, formation, or style of play. His whole approach to the game is hoof it as far as you can to a six foot block of Lard, and hope he does something with it ! The only decent signings Slade has made are Forbes, Gordon and Ramsden ( the latter injured ! )

Could the unthinkable happen this year ? You bet your life it could. A twelve point gap exists between us and Scunny ( who at best were no better than a good Sunday pub team ). I'm not sure after Saturday's game if Town have got four more wins in them. We lack spirit, conviction, ideas and belief. In my opinion Coldicott has been a huge weak link in the Grimsy team for many a season, and his performance on Saturday highlighted this even more so. He has no vision, no pace, and a best can only offer five or six tackles a game. Players just skip past him like he's invisible. Sestanovich is clearly a couple of sandwiches short of a hamper. The guy is clearly not at the races, and we don't need another Disco Des in the team. Can anybody explain to me why we keep getting such a poor standard of player at this club. The club has no money I hear you all say !! Sorry to dissapoint the knockers, but 99.99% of clubs now have no money, but hell, they sure are coping better than we are.

For Town to have any chance of keeping their season alive, Slade and Rodger should be shown the door immediately. The truth hurts in life, but the simple truth is that JOHN FENTY has done everything on the cheap since his involvement with the club, and this level of cheap will eventually culminate in the people of Grimsby no longer having a league team to support.

The mere fact that Fenty thought that a Conference Manager ( a poor one at that ) could revive Town's ailing fortunes, speaks volumes about his knowledge of the game. Just look at Scarborough now !! They sure as hell arent missing Fred Elliots doble-ganger are they. Fenty needs to decide very soon if Grimsby are to remain a professional football club, or whether or not they end up part-time. Yes, I know he has invested his own money in the club, but we are sinking without trace under his decision making. Maybe he wants us to play all our games on Friday night, in a Town which mainly employs shift / factory workers ? Maybe he wants to attract big gates by letting in everybody for free ?

The message is simple Mr Fenty. Get us a proper manager with league experience, and lets take this club forward. Slade uses formations that quite franky baffle football experts, never mind paying fans.

Keep doing things on the cheap, and this club will die without trace, teh vultures are circling already. We all know what needs doing, the question is, will it be done too late, as is the normal scenario.

A final word on the Grimsby fans. Brilliant as ever. Backed their team to the hilt this year again, with little reward to show for it. How much longer can their loyalty last ?

A very dissillusioned long time season ticket holder.
