Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Clint Marcelle Released

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 12/11/2004

CLINT Marcelle has been released by the Mariners after failing to break into the first team since the start of the season. The veteran forward left the club the day after his 36th birthday, where he has been on a weekly contract with Town all season.

The Trinidad & Tobago striker made only five appearances for Grimsby, four of them as sub. His only start came in the LDV Trophy against Carlisle, and Marcelle never scored a goal for Town, nor particularly looked like doing so in the few chances he got.

Meanwhile Russell Slade has admitted striker Darren Mansaram is up for sale if the price is right. Halifax made a bid last week for the 21-year-old front player, who has been on loan at The Shay, but Town dismissed the Conference outfit's offer as "derisory".

However, the Town boss told Radio Humberside: "You've got to be mature enough to listen to offers for players. It may be that they [Halifax] come up with an improved offer and we say yes. That will allow me a bit of flexibility in the market place".

Slade has himself been looking for a new striker for some time, and yesterday was linked with a loan move for Hull City's Jonathan Walters. That now looks unlikely following the collapse today of a transfer to the KC by Stockport striker Luke Beckett.
