Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

A Call To Arms! - Or For Alms

By: The Fishy Team
Date: 07/01/2005

THE statements have been made, the announcements have been made about the 'save our club campaign' or whatever the trust is going to call it. All that remains to be done is the counting of the money raised.

Oops! I think I am jumping ahead of myself there.

One thing the announcements and statements have proved is that the club are in serious financial difficulties regarding the outstanding debt to the tax office.

Disregard any other silly notions, denials and alternative theories.

Grimsby Town Football Club is in serious trouble. Without community support it will not be able to pay off the tax bill and remain a viable entity. At worst wound up, at best, Conference League.

(administration has been suggested as the best option. If that happened we would lose the directors and need a knight in shining armour to bring us out of administration. It also put strict limits as what the club can do regarding the acquisition of players and in the day-to-day financial management. The club have already sought advice on this and rejected it as a solution to GTFC's problems.)

The club therefore are asking for the support of the community. Not to buy a player (as per Bonnetti) but to save the club being wound up or placed in administration. The board have made the decision that neither option is acceptable and are looking for help in seeing that neither happens.

The 'official' launch of the campaign will probably be on Monday after the trust have had meetings with the board and Ian Fleming, the CEO, returns from sick leave.

Already people are asking what they can do to help and where to send donations and that is very much appreciated.

If you want to make a donation, the GTST site has a facility on PayPal enabling you to make an immediate gift to kick off the campaign.

The Fishy is assisting the trust in the campaign and it will remain a priority item on this site until the end of the campaign.

Once the campaign is officially launched, we will be seeking the assistance of everyone in the community and that means everyone giving a hand in the campaign.

The GTST will be releasing further news as it arises.
