Joy for Jones

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 23/05/2006

LEADING scorer Gary Jones has had his red card against Lincoln reversed in a rare decision by an FA disciplinary committee. The repeal means than Jones will be free to play in Sunday's Play-Off final, a massive boost for the club ahead of their biggest game of the season.

Jones received a red card during injury time in the 2-1 victory over the Imps at Blundell Park for use of the elbow in a challenge on City defender Gareth McAuley. Although Jones did raise his arms, the decision looked harsh, as television replays showed there was no intent and Jones was attempting to strike the ball. Both McAuley and Lincoln boss Keith Alexander testified in favour of Gary Jones, and this was considered by the FA.

Jones was dismissed for violent conduct, which the FIFA rules define as: "A player is guilty of violent conduct if he uses excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball."

Despite the evidence in his favour Jones was not hopeful due the club's lack of success in the past when they have appealed against decisions.

"I was preparing to go to the game with Macca and wasn't preparing to play," a delighted Gary Jones told Mariners Net. "I need to get myself fit now and prepare for the game. I can't wait for Sunday now."

Town's only first choice absentee now looks like being John McDermott, although there is still a question over Michael Reddy's ability to play 90+ minutes.

  • In other news management team Russell Slade and Graham Rodger have not yet signed their new contracts as expected. The pair are not now expected to put pen to paper until after Sunday's massive game against Cheltenham.
