Eleven Fans Arrested

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 07/01/2008

ELEVEN Grimsby supporters were arrested during the game with Chesterfield, which was marred by crowd trouble at both ends of the ground caused by followers of the Mariners.

A group of around ten Grimsby supporters had infiltrated the home end intent on causing trouble. Ten minutes into the game they began provocative chanting and fighting broke out in the home 'Kop' end of the ground.

Simultaneously several Town supporters were dragged from the opposite end of the ground where the away fans were gathered and led from the stadium in front of the rest of the Mariners' supporters (pictured below). A few Town fans were also carted off for going on the pitch when Danny North scored Grimsby's first goal just before half time.

The police have revealed that four people were arrested for encroaching onto the playing area, two fans were arrested for breaching their banning orders, one for being drunk and disorderly, one for affray and three for public order offences.

All concerned have been bailed pending further enquiries.

Grim Rob Says. The fans who deliberately went in the home end to cause trouble should be thrown the book at. This tactic belongs to a previous era and it is sad to see it still happening in today's game. "Supporters" like these give Town a bad name and detract from everyone's enjoyment as it means some of our games get pushed forward to early kick off times, which are a pain in the neck. They also put supporters off travelling to games, especially those with families. We need all the geunine support we can get.
