Beat the Bookies: Week 24

WREXHAM'S win over MK Dons may have caused a few shockwaves in League Two last week, but not for regular readers of Beat the Bookies, who may even have backed it themselves!

Grimsby pass a milestone this week, one of recognition from the bookies. For the first time in a while they are clear favourites to win a game, when they face Shrewsbury at home. Town are 13/10 and Shrews are 9/5 with bet365. Grimsby have scraped through their last couple of home games against poor sides, but Shrewsbury themselves have only just merged from a bad patch, so the odds look about right.
Could MK Dons be due to lose their third game on the trot, after the league leaders have been toppled by Barnet and Wrexham in their last two games, without even managing a goal? This week they face Rochdale at home, and Dale are in sparkling form right now. Dale can be backed at 7/2 with Ladbrokes, well worth a punt in our opinion.
In the FA Cup Havant and Waterlooville are 100/1 to win at Anfield! There are a number of League Two clubs playing in Round Four, namely Mansfield (7/1 v Boro), Peterborough (10/3 v WBA), Bury (8/1 at Soton), Barnet (7/4 v Bristol R), Hereford (3/1 v Cardiff). The trick in the last round was to look for which team decided to rest players. If WBA decide promotion to the Premiership is more important than the cup then Peterborough could well cause an upset at London Road.
But bet of the round has to be Newcastle to win at the Emirates. Arsenal were walloped by Spurs this week and Kevin Keegan's honeymoon period should be approaching its peak. At any rate 7/1 is well worth a punt of the Geordies against an Arsenal side who themselves might decide to rest a player or two.
Recommended Bets
- 1. Rochdale to beat MK Dons (7/2, Ladbrokes).
- 2. Newcastle to beat Arsenal (7/1, bet365).
