After a solid first year playing around half the games Bennett became a first team regular in 2008-2009, and that was shortly followed by becoming Town captain at the age of 18. In the summer of 2009 Grimsby surprised many people by turning down a figure rumoured to be around half a million from Peterborough for the Town teenager.
