Cup Dreams Over

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/11/2009

TOWN went out of their second cup competition in the space of a week after a 3-1 defeat at Elland Road. Despite the disappointment it was a much improved performance over the 2-0 humiliation at home to Bath City on Saturday, and Town fought right to the end.

Grimsby held Leeds at bay until the last 5 minutes of the first half when Leeds scored twice. The first goal was an unfortunate Lancashire own goal which deflected in from a cross. Killkenny then added a second when he scored from a 1-2 just before half time.

Leeds looked to have sealed it when a brilliant finish by Beckford made it three, but Town pulled a fantastic goal back by Sweeney from a corner, his volley going in off the underside of the bar after the 'keeper had punched the ball clear.

Substitute Bradley Wood then had a great chance to pull another goal back for the Mariners when he was played through with just the 'keeper to beat, but hit shot was smothered.

Town fought valiantly right until the end but it was not to be.
