Morecambe v Grimsby Preview

By: Alex Green
Date: 12/03/2010

IT was a revival if only briefly. Town's optimism has been destroyed in one Dario Gradi swoop and now Grimsby must face a Morecambe team who play football of all things!

Who are they?

This Season.

Morecambe have yet to give up on a play off spot this season. The Shrimpers are just 7 points off a chance at the post season lottery and with a game in hand on many of those above them and when you take in to account the leagues meagre goal differences it looks even brighter for the north western club. It hadn’t started well for though it took Morecambe till their tenth game of the season to record their first win which was against Notts County involving the infamous Sol Campbell one match wonder. After that the Shrimpers charged on looking for more but the wins weren’t particularly forth coming it took another 7 matches for them to tot up their second victory of the season against Lincoln, they were 21st at the start of the match just 2 points off ourselves at the time. After that an 8 game unbeaten streak saw them shoot up the league to play off contention where they now sit happy as Larry. Lucky barstewards.

Key Player...

Phil Jevons. Who else but the former Mariner? League Two seems to be awash with players who once fizzled our excitement in years gone by but now they are just an envious part of our depressing life. We all know his history: the scouser started at Everton and joined us along with Chris Thompson from Liverpool both the leading goal scorers in their youth teams. Whatever happened to Chris Thompson? Anyway he shined, he boasted, he became a player who was a symbol of our ultimate extravagance and the sheer lunacy of our collapse. Restricted from playing for a time because doing so would have the club incur a wrath of actually paying some money out. Anyway after us he went to a succession of clubs becoming a hero at most. Bristol City, Yeovil, Huddersfield and Bury all were a brief stop for him before surprisingly landing at Morecambe on loan from Huddersfield. The guy can at times be a class above and could still be playing in The Championship if it was called for. It's no surprise Morecambe’s best run came in the midst of his. Though half a yard slower than when he was in his pomp he is still bloody fantastic.
