The Axe Swingeth

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 03/05/2011

GRIMSBY are to release virtually a whole team of players in a summer clearout as the managerial axe makes the Tory budget cuts look like a pruning. Lee Peacock, Michael Leary, Peter Bore, Rob Atkinson, Mark Hudson, Micky Cummins, Steven Watt, Bryan Hughes and Dean Sinclair have all been told their contracts will not be renewed.

Charles Ademeno and Serges Makofu, who still have contracts at Blundell Park, had earlier been told they were free to leave, hinting at the dramatic changes to come.

Just eight senior players remain, some of whom may be enticed away on the transfer market notably top scorer Connell and Michael Coulson.

Grim Rob Says: Those who wanted Neil Woods sacked, be careful what you wish for! It takes time to build a football team, and nobody at Blundell Park has ever been given the opportinity to do so in recent years. Fans may be glad to see the back of some of the released players, but the replacements have yet to be seen. My gut feeling is that there is little hope of a top five finish next season starting from scratch. I said that last summer as well, but looked on it as a two year project. Effectively we are starting again so I'm banking on promotion in 2012-2013. But will the new managers be given two years if the first one is not a success? I doubt it!
