Braintree Curse Broken

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/11/2014

GRIMSBY climbed to second in the table with their fifth successive league win, and they finally scored a goal at Braintree. The Mariners had failed to win or even score in Essex on three previous occasions, but this time man of the moment John-Lewis popped up to pounce on a fumble by the 'keeper.

John-Lewis's goal proved to be the only one in a match of few chances to either side, but it was Town that generated what little chances there were. Braintree only had one shot on goal all night.

Grimsby were unchanged for the trip to Braintree and shaded a lacklustre first half in which neither side had an attempt on target.

Town finally took the lead midway through the second half when a rare shot on target by Clay took the 'keeper unawares and John-Lewis was on hand to smash the rebound past the 'keeper.

Town looked comfortable, and only the bookings of referee Christopher Powell looked likely to cause a problem (eventually five Grimsby players were booked).

Grimsby saw the lead out and won 1-0 to climb to second in the table.

Town: McKeown, Magnay, Nsiala, Pearson, Thomas, Disley; Pell, Clay, Mackreth, Arnold, John-Lewis
