The Taming of the Shrews

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 08/12/2015

GRIMSBY were unfortunate not to beat Shrewsbury in last night's televised FA Cup tie at Blundell Park. The Mariners twice hit the woodwork, were denied a penalty and generally were the better side against their League One opponents.

Should the Mariners win the replay they will play Russell Slade's Cardiff in Round 3 in Wales.

Almond almost gave Town the lead in the first half with a great piece of skill. The striker let the ball drop over him, turned and shot against the woodwork with the 'keeper nowhere.

Town were denied a penalty when Townsend was brought down in the box by Leutwiler, who was injured in the process and stretchered off. Substitute 'keeper Mark Halstead came on to replace him.

A misplaced pass by Richard Tait led to Shrewsbury's best chance. Vernon was clean through for a one-on-one with McKeown, who managed to get a leg to the ball and hoof it upfield almost letting Grimsby in for a chance themselves.

Town had to settle for a draw and although they won't be favourites to win the replay they have nothing to fear from Shrewsbury after outclassing the League One side in every department.
