Town Bow Out of Title Race

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 02/04/2016

GRIMSBY have to resign themselves to promotion via the play-offs after losing last night at leader's Cheltenham. The Mariners were second best for most of the night, and ended up losing 3-1, a result which sees the Robins complete the double over Town.

Paul Hurst made one change, bringing in Toto Nsiala at right-back in place of Richard Tait in an attempt to deal with Cheltenham's aerial threat.

The referee was very generous to Shaun Pearson when he awarded a found against the Town centre back for a clear hand-ball, which would have resulted in a penalty against the Mariners.

However the referee made another incorrect decision, ironically against Pearson, when the defender was adjudged to have fouled his opponent, although there was minimal contact. Cheltenham's Dayton lifted the ball over the wall and past McKeown to give the home side the lead.

The goal Town spurred Town on and the Mariners started to threaten slightly more. A sustained spell of pressure resulted in a Town corner which Cheltenham were unable to clear and Monkhouse eventually drilled a loose ball through a crowded six yard box and into the net.

Former Mariner Harry Pell put Cheltenham back in front before long after benefiting from a defensive mistake by Grimsby, and Danny Wright added a third to put the game beyond Grimsby.

Town need to lick their wounds, regroup, and ensure they got the points they need for a play-off spot.
