Town Crash Out Cup

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 05/11/2017

GRIMBSY lost their tenth consecutive cup game to leave the Mariners just competing in the Football League again this season. The Mariners have not won a cup tie since they beat Bognor Regis in the FA Trophy semi final in the 2015-2016 season.

Many of the ties have been against higher league opposition and League One Plymouth were the latest victors on Saturday, although Town put up a valiant effort and came close to an equaliser in the closing stages.

Danger man Carey gave Argyle an early lead when he was allowed to run with the ball, and with the defence backing off, placed it past McKeowen. Carey continued to torment Town and set up Grant but the striker fired just wide.

Carey almost scored his second from a free kick, but James McKeown palmed it on to the top of the cross bar to keep Town in the game.

Town improved after the break and Dembele forced a save from Matthews and substitute Jaiyesimia also went close, but it was not to be despite lots of late pressure from Town, who had left it late to really stamp their authority onto the game.

Grimsby's next game is ironically another cup game, although it's a dead rubber match against Sunderland in the notrious Checkatrade trophy.
