Town Beat Leaders Stockport

GRIMSBY gave their prospects of a top-seven finish a huge boost when they beat leaders Stockport County at home today. The champions-elect bossed the first half and deserved to be ahead at the break. However, Sarcevic's sending off on 35 minutes gave Grimsby more space after the break and they made the most of the opportunity.
Efete replaced Cropper and Scannell was chosen in preference to Maguire-Drew; otherwise, the side was the same as last week at Weymouth.
Stockport started strongly and took the lead after a Grimsby mistake in midfield and Madden played it into Quigley, who beat Crocombe from close range.
Stockport continued to look the better side, but Town were given a lifeline when Sarcevic received a straight red for a high mistimed challenge on Efete ten minutes before the break. Initially, the extra man made little difference, but after the break gaps began to emerge and Town had more meaningful possession. Efete had a shot saved and then Holohan struck an effort wide.
Town needed a more attacking edge and Maguire-Drew replaced Clifton on the hour mark, and the equaliser was not long coming. Taylor played MacAtee through and the latter then cut inside and slid the ball past the keeper to bring Grimsby back in the game.
Stockport were now on the ropes and McAtee had another shot deflected for a corner from which Town added a second when Waterfall headed Maguire-Drew's kick across the goal for Holohan to blast it in from close range.
McAtee could have added a third when he was played through for a one-on-one with the keeper but his effort was blocked.
Town negotiated their way to the full time whistle and picked up an unexpected three points, the sending off obviously helped but they still had to organise themselves against a still formidable opponent. Grimsby now need to consolidate their play-off spot with three points at King's Lynn on Monday to return maximum points from the Easter break.
