Town Record First Home Win

GRIMSBY recorded their first home win of the season, and also their biggest league win of the season in a comfortable 3-0 victory over Crawley. It was not their most emphatic performance of the season though and events went their way when the officials disallowed an equaliser in the first half.

Four changes were made from last week's makeshift side at Salford. Efete, Maguire-Drew, Kiernan and Taylor all started with Maher, Hunt, Richardson and Pepple making way.

Town got an early free kick and Glennon, in the autumn sunshine, superbly planted the ball directly in the net with the 'keeper rooted to his spot. Crawley though didn't wilt and in fact, looked the more threatening side through much of the remainder of the first half, and had the majority of possession with Grimsby stuggling to get their game going.

It looked like the visitors had equalised when the Town defence failed to clear their lines, and the ball ricocheted around the box. Telford eventually put the ball in the net, but after discussions between the ref and his assistant, it was ruled offside. Many officials might not have been as diligent, so it was a big let-off for Town.

The Mariners started the second half as they had the first with a quick goal. Good play but Khan saw him beat his man, get a cross in, and Holohan was on the end of it to fire Grimsby 2-0 up.

Crocombe made a good save to deny Tilley and keep the two-goal cushion, but Town looked more comfortable than they did in the first half, although home fans couldn't feel entirely comfortable without a third which duly came when Pepple and Taylor linked up, with the latter landing the killer blow after Taylor's stumbling run came to an end.

Crawley looked like a side low on confidence, but Grimsby will look on three goals and a clean sheet without playing at their best as a huge positive on top of a first win in front of their supporters.

Next up is a trip to Stockport on Saturday, their first match against one of last season's opponents. The equivalent match at the start of last season ended 0-0, and Town would probably be happy with a point again against once of the top 4 sides in the division.
