GRIMSBY raced into a 1-0 lead in the opening minute through Evan Khouri and never relinquished it at in-form Salford. Vernam added a second in the first half, and the Mariners defended resolutely at times, especially in the first half, with Pym making some good saves.

Artell made two changes from the side which crushed Cheltenham: Burns and Khouri replacing Oduor and Walker. Town scored in the opening minute when Vernam beat his man and cut the ball back for Khouri to slot it past the Salford keeper.

Pym needed to make a good save from Cesay, but Grimsby had some more dangerous attacks, albeit without many direct threats on goal. That changed, though, when Vernam fired a low shot from the edge of the box, which eluded everyone and ended up in the bottom of the net.

Grant had a golden chance to reduce the deficit but skied his chance from close range, and then Pym made another save to deny Udoh.

Town had chances to add to their lead in the second half, with McEachran and Vernam both drawing saves from the keeper. Salford were unable to break down a well-organised Town side, though, and the Mariners always looked the more likely to add a third goal.

The result lifts Town into an automatic promotion slot. Town have not won automatic promotion for 35 years, but if they keep progressing in this exciting season, then there has never been a better chance to do so.
