Town Advance into Round 4

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 11/01/2026

GRIMSBY ended the right side of a 5-goal FA Cup encounter with Weston Super Mare at Blundell Park. Town took the lead twice, only for Weston to level, both from free kicks. Sub Kieran Green, though, scored the winner with a near-post flick from a corner.

David Artell fashionably rested several first-team players (despite the enforced postponement on Sunday against Cambridge), leaving Town with a strong-looking bench, including new signing Tyrell Sellars-Fleming.

Warren at right back was prominent early on, setting up Burns for an early chance and forcing a save from Harris for Grimsby's first corner. Grimsby almost had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper when a great pass by Soonsup-Bell set up Burns in a counterattack, but a perfectly timed challenge by Pope took the ball off his feet. Weston then had their first attempt when Coulson shot straight at Smith, a yard either side and Town would have conceded.

Grimsby looked short of goalscorers and failed to make the most of Harris spilling a cross from Vernam, and Weston were able to recover. Vernam looked the most likely to break the deadlock; he'd had a few shots, mainly high above the goal, and one tipped over for a corner, but found his range from that corner, which was played short to him, and the winger blasted it in from a wide position to give the Mariners the lead.

Town started the second half slowly and barely saw the ball for the opening 5 minutes. It was not long before Weston equalised thanks to a deflected Coulson free kick, which sent the 500 fans in the away end into raptures.

Town were struggling to create anything, and David Artell turned to his strong-looking bench on the hour mark, bringing on Kabia and Green. It wasn't long before they made an impact with their presence at set pieces, making a real difference. Kabia put Town back in front with a brilliant flick when the ball was played back into him for a corner.

Weston's first goal had an element of fortune, but their second, which also came from a free kick, was a well-worked routine, involving several touches, and ultimately flicked in by Britton.

Kabia almost scored his second from a Green pass, but Town scored the winner from the ensuing corner with a trademark near-post flick on by Green, which went straight in at the far post.

Weston played their part, but Town's quality on the bench made the real difference, and Grimsby continue in the competition for what will be their 8th cup tie in the two main competitions - 7 of which have been at Blundell Park. Who next? We'll find out on Monday evening.
