Poor Show at Oldham

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 15/03/2026

GRIMSBY succumbed to only their second league defeat of 2026 with a 1-0 reverse at Oldham. In a generally poor game, the Mariners hit the bar through substitute Jamie Walker, but it was a home sub who scored the only goal, running on to score what would prove to be the winner.

Sweeney, Sellars-Fleming and Soonsup-Bell replaced Staunton, Vernam and Cook in the three changes to the starting line-up. Jason Svanthorsson was an unused substitute, but a hint of things to come in the final 10 games.

A poor first half yielded few opportunities for either side, and Cook came on for Soonsup-Bell at the start of the second. Walker came on and then was unlucky when his shot curled onto the bar. Oldham hit Town with a killer punch on the break when Hammond split the Town defence with a ball for Hawkes to run on to and slot it past Smith.

It was a poor game in which Grimsby struggled to create anything and barely managed a decent cross all game. A 0-0 draw would have at least yielded a point, but Town didn't even have that consolation. The Mariners have two home games next week to make amends, though, starting with the visit of Fleetwood on Tuesday.
