The One that Got Away

GRIMSBY had to settle for a point for the second successive weekend after surrendering a 2-1 lead against Fleetwood, a match in which they had been 1-0 behind after an early goal from the visitors. Andy Cook was adjudged offside in a late decision which would have won the match.
David Artell continued with the same line-up as had started in the 0-0 draw at Walsall last week, with Town definitely pursuing a settled line-up strategy. The zero goals conceded stat, though, didn't take long to come to an end, as the defence lost concentration for an early short corner and it was flicked into the path of Davies for a simple tap-in. Green was then deemed offside when a deflected shot from Doyle fell to him. It was to be a day of offside decisions.
Christy Pym kept the scores level with a good save from Ched Evans, before Town took the lead just before half time when Turi split the defence to find Green on the right, who crossed from the byeline for Doyle to finish off the move at the far post with his first goal for the club. He can't have scored many easier.
Grimsby could have gone ahead before half time when Cook went close from an Amaluzor cross. Finch came on for Amaluzor at half-time to make his Town debut, but Grimsby were very lucky to keep the score level when a rare Turi mistake led to a pass being intercepted and played through to Evans, who hit the post with Pym beaten when he looked very likely to score.
Town were the dominant side but deservedly went ahead with a move which started with Pym rolling the ball out to Turi, who picked out Cook with a delightfully weighted ball. Cook had options but was only going to shoot, and some brilliant footwork made the finish look far easier than it was when he slotted the ball past the keeper to put Grimsby ahead.
Fleetwood has always looked dangerous and soon levelled with another poorly defended move which saw a cross not picked up and Coughlan had an easy finish to nod the ball past Pym from point-blank range.
It could have been a fairytale ending with yet another goal from close range when a marginal decision saw Cook deemed offside, and what would have been 3-2 ended up being 2-2.
Town will probably feel they dropped points, but they did well to turn the game around, rode their luck with the Evans chance, and did everything but win with Cook's goal. The unbeaten start to the season continues, and Town next visit Accrington on Tuesday, one of six sides yet to win a game.
