Watford Report Card

DR FISHY has compiled match statistics and a report card for the Grimsby Town side that lost 2-0 away to Watford, this time aided and abetted by the referee once again.

Coyne: Our best player on the day (as usual), who made many fine stops to restrict Watford to just two goals. He made a couple of good blocks and one great save before the first goal, but as always the ten in front of him just didn't perform.
Grade: B-
McDermott: It was quite a comical moment to see Macca up there with the strikers in the second half. At one point he was doing the chasing and the hassling to force the defenders into making a mistake. But, as he pushed forward, he left gaps at the back.
Grade: C+
Gallimore: I think it's fairly evident that Gally prefers playing in a 5-3-2 system. As a left back he's gone back to the way he was over the past few seasons. Pennant was causing him trouble all game until he got him sent off, and himself for that matter.
Grade: D+
Groves: This was the first game since the Preston away match that we have been missing Ford - and it showed. The manager never looked comfortable all game and it was made more difficult for him to accept defeat on the field.
Grade: D+
Raven: One of our better outfield players on the day. Defensively sound but we were opened up too much at the back near the end of the game. He got forward at every opportunity and was unlucky not to see his header go into the back of the net.
Grade: C+
Campbell: The largely anonymous Campbell was probably the most creative Town player. He was the one to bring the ball through midfield, with the help of McDermott too. Watching the game on TV again, he didn't seem that bad.
Grade: C
Willems: Did he touch the ball in the first half? His booking was ridiculous, another bad refereeing decision. Having said that, he was never in trouble of being sent off because he stayed away from the ball so much.
Grade: D-
Burnett: I would personally like to know what his role is in the team. To give the opposition a chance to break away? If he gives the ball away cheaply once more, then I'll cry. Totally lacklustre performance. Pathetic.
Grade: E
Pouton: I know he's regarded well at this club by the fans but even the most optimistic of you must agree that although he got stuck in, he never really did anything of note. He has to do a lot more in midfield but he was missing Stace.
Grade: C-
Taylor: Looked okay until he was taken off but then again, right from the start it threatened to be a waste of time. Won't grade him because that would be unfair.
Boulding: He really wanted to bring his pace into the game but couldn't because he was so tightly marked and none of the midfield supported him. All he could do was chase, and there was no threat from him in the air.
Grade: C-
SUBS
Jevons: Give the lad the ball at his feet; it's obvious he wants it there. As we didn't, he was made to look very poor. He never really looked like scoring either and even his free kick was tame. No service from midfield once more.
Grade: D+
Allen: I didn't see him touch the ball either.
Butterfield: Muscled off the ball once, but I like the tactic of bringing on our most dangerous midfielder with two minutes to go to let him turn the game around ;)
Best part of Town's performance: When the full backs pushed up in the second half. Only then did we look even remotely dangerous.
Areas for improvement: No comment.
Entertainment scale: Hmm, let me see. We lost 2-0, didn't look like scoring, Watford were poor, we were worse and Gally got sent off. How can I say that it was entertaining? 2

| A* | This is almost impossible to achieve as I will refuse to give anyone this grade - unless they score six goals and get opposing players sent off. |
| A | This is more possible to achieve, although the player must have had a brilliant game i.e. he can't have put a foot wrong all match. |
| A- | The player must have performed superbly, setting up goals, scoring goals, making match-winning tackles etc. |
| B+ | The player played to a very high standard indeed having been influential throughout the 90 minutes. |
| B | This can be achieved if the player had a very good game overall but could be forgiven for making one or two minor mistakes. |
| B- | The player put in a performance worthy of special mention for his efforts on the pitch or otherwise having a good game. |
| C+ | A mark for players who have had an average game but at the same time played well in patches and may have had an impact on the final score. |
| C | An average performance but not worthy of being dropped for the next game - a competent performance. |
| C- | Start thinking about the player's attitude and commitment on the pitch. Showed little effort and was probably invisible for most of the match. |
| D+ | Poor game and realistically shouldn't feature in the next game. |
| D | This player shouldn't be playing in the near future. |
| D- | The player deserves to be fined for his abysmal performance |
| E | The player should be sacked |
| F | And then shot |
