Scunthorpe United Take Michael Jeffrey On Loan!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 12/03/2002

Grimsby Town have loaned Scunthorpe United Michael Jeffrey for a month. "It gives Michael the opportunity to play some football. said Paul Groves "And he can get himself in the shop window. He's a senior player, and he's not been involved too much in the 1st team, it's a good opportunity for him"

Mariners Net, who released the news today, quoted Groves as saying: "Scunthorpe picked up an injury on Saturday to Quayle, so it gives Michael the opportunity to play some first team football." The Iron had last month been strongly linked with bringing fellow Grimsby striker Bradley Allen to Glanford Park, but Town were not willing to release the former QPR forward whilst in the middle of a fight for First Division survival.

"We have a couple of trialists at the moment, one from Tottenham - Distan - and another one from Wimbledon - Anton. They are, respectively, a midfield player and a centre half."

"They're both nineteen, well-built, strong players. Obviously, they're the younger element of the squad so we're just having a look at those."

"It's more of a longer term view with those two than with the idea of an immediate use, it will give us an opportunity to look at them as players."

"Bradley hasn't trained due to his injury, so we'll have to see how Bradley fares over the next few days, and Stuart Campbell as well - he took a knock on Saturday."

"We'll be pursuing one or two players before the deadline, whether we can get them in will be very difficult because teams don't want to let players out before the deadline because then they've had it with regards to the run-in to the end of the season, so teams are very reluctant to let players go."

"We're tied with the Martin Pringle loan which takes us up virtually to the deadline, so we can't do anything up until that expires anyway."

In an interview with the Scunthorpe Telegraph the Iron's manager manager Brian laws said: "I was never going to be able to bring in a Paul Gascoigne or anyone like that."

"If I had looked as high as the Premier League, all I was going to get was an inexperienced youngster who may, or may not have done a job for us."

"I felt I needed to look for experience, particularly now when we are coming into the last stages of the season."

"Daylight's ahead of us and we have got to make sure we have the players who can handle the pressure as well."

"The one thing I have been looking for credentials-wise is to bring someone in who is not just going to come here and be in the comfort zone. I want them to come here and give their lot for Scunthorpe United."

"I expect hard work from players and there is no point me bringing someone in who thinks they can just cruise through games."

"Not only will Mike give me that work rate, but I feel he can play alongside Steve Torpey and get me a couple of goals."
