Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Have the Board Got it Wrong?

By: Tony Hamilton
Date: 21/09/2002

AFTER the sacking of Lennie Lawrence, the board made one fatal mistake by giving Grimsby Town yet another player manager because he was the cheapest option at the time.

If you go back into the history of our beloved club only one man succeeded at the job: Allenby Chilton, and the other two made fatal mistakes which left Grimsby Town laughing stock of football.

Take for instance Mick Lyons, who served at Sheffield Wednesday under Howard Wilkinson when we approached him for the job. He brought with him silly tactics and decided he was a centre forward which never helped the team out at all.

A few years later along came Brian Laws, another one who thought he could take other people's tactics to our club and make them work. One fact that not a lot of people know about Brian Laws is that he wasn't even considered for the job at the time. He benefited from someone's poor misfortune (but it was really us that suffered),

Then along came the worst bit of management that ever happened at Blundell park - letting us have another player manager, yet again with no experience, and handed him a three year contract to boot. The only one that will benefit from this is Paul Groves as he knows the financial aspects of the club, and also knows that the club have to honour that contract whatever happens to the Mariners in the next season.

So why did the club take an risk in doing this as we all know that Grimsby Town, even taking the ITV Digital fiasco into consideration, are trying to balance the books, and when this all goes wrong (which it will soon), where will the directors go then?

Hopefully they'll see sense and go for someone who know the First Division inside out and spare us all the heartache of watching The Mariners suffer, as they have done for the last few seasons
