Should Groves be Sacked?

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/09/2003

I am not an admirer of Mr Groves (as a manager) and I was probably one of his harshest critics last season. I have always believed it was a mistake to appoint him owing to his lack of experience.

But this is a new season and talk of sacking him at this stage is a bit premature. He should be allowed to get his act in order, sort out the problems we have in defence particularly by stopping this silly search for a striker we don't need and find a replacement for at least one of the back 4.

For those who either saw the game or listened to it, the Hartlepools game was a total disaster but it is not the end of the world. When Groves was appointed manager, we knew the Mariners would lose a few games, as do all clubs. The Hartlepools game was one of those losses.

The goal count was embarrassing, the performance of the players even more so, but it still counts as L1 in the statistics. We need to forget this game but remember the lessons we were taught there.

What Groves needs to do now is play the heavy handed game with his favourites. Even if it means trying some of the youngsters like Nimmo, who from reports appeared to be hungrier than our so-called key players.

He should also call the Hartlepools game his last game! We have better youngsters waiting in the wings than him.

But calling for his head at this stage is not the answer. He needs a bit more time to get the team and himself sorted. Maybe another 6 or 7 games. Who knows?

We have another joust coming on Tuesday night, which will give the squad the opportunity to wipe the memory of the pasting we got on Black Friday.

Another disaster like that and Mr Groves really will need to be on his way. But right now we need to just show a little more patience, give him a chance to right the wrongs and get us back on track again.

If he doesn't do that over the next few games, it will not be too late to find a replacement to save us from the third division and beyond. But sacking him now might prove to be a bigger mistake than appointing him in the first place.

Have faith! For a little while longer at least!
