FORMER Huddersfield midfielder Lee Fowler is hoping his performances in two friendlies for Grimsby will earn him a contract with Town.

Fowler played in Monday's defeat to Sheff Wed, as well as the Lincolnshire Cup game with Scunthorpe, and was one of Town's best players according to many observers.

The 22-year-old midfielder told the Grimsby Telegraph: "Hopefully somebody upstairs likes me because I have got a lot to offer Grimsby. To be honest, I will be disappointed if nothing comes of this. There is a good set of lads here and I have been getting on really well. I think a move would be good for both of us - myself and Grimsby Town."

Fowler said: "I thought I did okay in the first half, but it is a year since I have played back-to-back games and I knew I'd fade a bit towards the end. It was good, but I know I will improve."

  • Grimsby's first choice 'keeper Steve Mildenhall is expected to by ready for the start of the new season after picking up an injury at the very start of the Mariners' pre-season which has sidelined him every since.

That means Chester trialist Wayne Brown, who has been filling in between the sticks in Mildenhall's absence, is unlikely to be offered a short-term contract at Blundell Park. Brown has also been offered a permanent deal in Denmark, whereas Town would have been looking for a loan move at most for the stand-in 'keeper.

  • Town defender Simon Ramsden is likely to be unavailable for up to a fortnight after picking up a knock in Monday's defeat by Sheffield Wednesday. The former Sunderland centre back should, however, be recovered in time for the start of the regular season, which begins on August 6th at Blundell Park.
