Beat the Summer Bookies: Week Four

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 25/06/2006

THE World Cup has gone to form so far, with the bigger nations generally going through and only a dwindling number of minnows left in the competition.

Home > 2005-2006 Season > Beat the Summer Bookies > Week 4

Probably the biggest "minnow" left is Ecuador who will be hoping to cause an upset against England later today. Ecuador, who "did" the Poles, played an under-strength team against Germany, so don't be followed by that scoreline. The 8.4 available on Betfair for an Ecuador win looks generous, but perhaps more realistic is to Lay an England win in 90 minutes, which is available for 1.53. That is this week's first recommended bet, and covers the possibility of the match being a draw, and an England win in extra time.

Portugal v Holland is to close to call, with Holland being the slight favourites on Betfair. In the remaining second round matches possible upsets are Ghana v Brazil and Australia v Italy. Of the two I fancy the former. Brazil have not been firing on all cylinders and Ghana are more than capable of at least getting a draw. Lay a Brazil win at around 1.29 is this week's second recommended bet.

Finally, Ukraine bizarrely are not favourites to beat Switzerland, despite their decent showing in every match except their opening game against Spain when a lot of refereeing decisions went against them. Back a Ukraine win (they should easily get past the Swiss) at around 3.25 on Betfair is this week's third recommended bet. Previous Bets (around £10 per week)
