Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Hero or Villain?

Reddy or Not

WELL here we are the start of a new season, it only seems like yesterday that we were all at Cardiff cheering the Mariners on to what we thought would be a play-off final victory against Cheltenham, and we all know what happened there.

So here we go the start of the 2006/2007 season, Town's first game is a home fixture against old Lincolnshire rivals Boston United. The pre-season matches have disappointed certain supporters, and pleased others: we are certainly playing more football but we have only scored one goal and not won a game.

Also we still need to add to our squad, and I know for a fact that Graham Rodger is working his socks off to bring new faces to the club. A huge blow to Graham was the injury that Gary Cohen has suffered, he is not expected to be fit for at least two months due to a foot injury, and then to top it all star player Michael Reddy decides to drop a bombshell by putting in a transfer request five days before the big kick-off.

Nice timing Michael, by all accounts you were quite happy before pre-season training started, so what has changed your mind? Maybe his agent has been ringing around to see if there is anybody out there who would take him on and found a club that is willing to gamble on a player that is not always available through injury, but in taking a chance with Reddy`s outstanding pace and ability to score goals think it is worth the risk.

A saying in football is the grass is not always greener on the other side. What might look like a good move could turn out a nightmare. Reddy is well thought of at Grimsby in what will be his third season at the football club if he had stayed, but I do not think his heart is in this club.

I sincerely hope that he has a rethink about moving, but I don't think that will happen he has obviously thought about it deeply and with the pressure of his agent who in my eyes is the guy who is pulling all the strings. I say let him go if he does not want to play for the club get the best possible deal and let's move on and hopefully with the money we could get for him get another striker.

On a parting note regarding Reddy I thought he lost interest in the final third of last season anyway, lost his spark, did not play a lot, nonexistent at Cardiff so maybe he needs to move on anyway. The club is always bigger than the player, the club will be going onwards hopefully to a new stadium soon, marching forward in the right direction. Michael Reddy will just be a player who will be in the Mariners archives. There will always be somebody around to replace him. It is just finding them that's all.
