The Opposition

Overview

Having sealed promotion from League Two through the play-offs in May 2004, the Terriers missed out on the League One play-offs the following season by only a single point. In the 2005/6 season they went one better, but missed out on promotion having been beaten in the play-off semi-finals by eventual winners Barnsley, 3-2 on aggregate. Manager Peter Jackson was sacked in March of last season after some controversial and well publicised disagreements with the board, including declining an offer of cash to spend on players. It was a 5-1 thrashing at Nottingham Forest that sealed his fate, with the board being quoted as saying ’It was due to our form and inability to attract key players.’ Only a short time before being given the sack, Jackson had of course led them to promotion. New boss Andy Ritchie led the team to 7 points from a possible 12 in the final games of the season, the Terriers finished in 15th position on 49 points, having finished 7th and 4th in the previous seasons.

This Season
In the close season it was announced that six of Huddersfield’s youth players would be given professional contracts, following on from the board signalling their intent to focus on bringing players through from the youth system in previous seasons. Many senior players were released as a result, including ex-Town loanee Martin McIntosh, Mark Hudson and Gary Taylor-Fletcher. Defender Frank Sinclair (left) was signed on a free as well as former Evertonian Danny Cadermarteri and Malvin Kamara. Other signings included defender Richard Keogh on loan from Bristol City and defender Robbie Williams from Blackpool. The Terriers beat Premiership Blackburn in a pre-season friendly, and followed this form into their League campaign. They have beaten Yeovil, Bournemouth and Millwall so far, losing to Carlisle at home. They were also beaten by promoted Blackpool in the League Cup 1-0, Huddersfield currently sit in 4th spot in League One win 9 points.

Key Player
Luke Beckett. 30-year-old striker Beckett has represented five clubs in his career, including Sheffield United and Stockport. He began his career with Chester City, and he had impressed Stockport County enough for them to sign him for £100,000 in 2001. Sheffield United signed him for half that in 2004, but he never scored a goal in 5 appearances for them. Beckett was then loaned to Huddersfield from the Blades where he scored 6 goals in 7 games. Following that, he spent time on loan with Oldham Athletic, a time in which he was equally deadly in front of goal. This form persuaded manager Peter Jackson to part with £85,000 for his services on a three year deal, since then Beckett has bagged a prolific 17 goals in 45 appearances. He had been equally reliable in front of goal throughout his career with 139 goals in 287 appearances, including 45 goals in 79 games during his spell with Stockport.

    Last Meeting

    Huddersfield 0-0 Grimsby (Tuesday 6th March 2001)

Town keeper Danny Coyne earned Town a point on a chilly March evening 6 years ago, he made saves to foil Terriers strikers Martin Smith and Kevin Gallen on a number of occasions. Town had chances of their own however, with Daryl Clare missing two clear-cut chances, but Martin Smith headed wide in the dying seconds from a Simon Baldry cross.
