Lennie Lawrence Confirms He Is Sorting Contracts!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 02/07/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE confirmed today that he is talking to a number of players regarding their future at the club. Peter Handyside, Wayne Burnett, Danny Coyne and Alan Pouton are the main subjects of his attention.

On Handyside and Burnett Lawrence told Mariners Net "Both players will be coming in in the next 24 hours to resolve their situations one way or the other. I've told Peter that if he can command the same sort of wages as Kevin Donovan elsewhere then we accept that we will lose him, but I've said to him that he should stay here for another season and if he can play 40 odd games, then he will surely get the sort of move he is after. If he only wants to sign a one year with us and doesn't want to commit to two years, then he can have just the one year."

On Donovan he said "Kevin phoned me to let me know his decision. He thanked me and was very complimentary about our club, but at the end of the day, Barnsley have made him an offer that he can't refuse, and one that we can't match. We wish him well."

Lennie also talked of his intentions with Coyne and Pouton saying, "I'll be talking to both players this week and I'm hoping that both of them will have signed new deals by the end of it. It is vital that we begin talking with players like this early, well before they are reaching the end of their current contracts."
