The following is an interview of Pete Conboy undertaken by The Fishy.
Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?
Pete:
GTFC v Notts County 1970-71, 2-1 to Town. This was the game before Matt Tees returned to GTFC.
Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?
Pete:
Joe Waters
Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?
Pete:
GTFC v Exeter City 1972
Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?
Pete:
My favourite ground is Newcastle's St. James Park. I've been 4 times and we've won 4 times.
My least favourite is Cambridge Utd.
Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?
Pete:
The best season is 79-80 when we were the Old Div. 3 champions, League Cup quarter finals and
taking 10,000 to Anfield.
The worst season was Mike L***s relegation season 86-87.
Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?
Pete:
Leicester away 1982/83. I copped with a really fit law student at an all
night party at Leeds University, but had to leave after a couple of hours
with her in her bed to go catch the train to Leicester - meeting some mates
for beer and footie, she never really understood and the relationship
quickly floundered.
Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?
Pete:
Alan Buckley
Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?
Pete:
I live in Ireland now so I only make 4-5 a season. I previously averaged 20ish. The best ever is 40 in
the 90-91 promotion season.
Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?
Pete:
Nigel Batch
John McDermott
Gary Croft
Peter Handyside
Paul Futcher
Tony Ford
Joe Waters
Paul Groves
Jack Lewis
Kevin Drinkell
Clive Mendonca
Subs:
Trevor Whymark
Bobby Cumming
Kevin Moore
Aidan Davison
Dave Gilbert
Fishy:
Do your children support the Mariners?
Pete:
We have two children, Patrick aged 5 is a Town fan at the moment but probably wavering after that
display vs Barnsley on Boxing Day.
Katie aged 1+ - can't decide between Town and Arsenal!
