Question of the Week

Where will Grimsby finish?

Cod Head Jostein Jensen

The following is an interview of Jostein Jensen undertaken by The Fishy.

Jostein Jensen is a 22 year old Norwegian Grimsby Town fan. He have followed them by AM-wave, Text-Tv and the Internet since the 1991 season when we were promoted to the Division 1 (old 2nd).
He started following them in a kind of opposition of all the Manchester U and Liverpool fans at school which he hated and hates because of they are only following the trophy teams. But the love of his team only grew. While the other pupils said Ooo-aaa-Cantona, Jostein screamed: Paul Futcher is the Future and Mark Lever is Clever. Today he can be met at the Grimsby town message board/mailing list complaining about the lack of Norwegian players at Town and why we don't use the 4-3-3 tactic!

Fishy:
When did you first start supporting the Mariners, and what was your first game?

Jostein:
I started to follow Town in 91/92-season after the team was promoted and the results come in the Norwegian newspapers. The first match I remember was from the season after. We won 1-0 away against Newcastle.

Fishy:
Who is the best player you ever saw wearing a Grimsby Town shirt?

Jostein:
Well it may sound some pathetic when you never have seen a Town game in real, Pat Glover is maybe the historical best player. But with my Town headlines-videos I would say Clive Mendonca, his hat-trick in injury comeback home versus Ipswich in 95/96 season was a cracker.

Fishy:
If there is one game you were allowed to go back in time and watch what would it be and why?

Jostein:
Tranmere - Grimsby 0-1.(1995/96)
We beat Tranmere away in Bonetti's big game. He scored a in the 26th minute after a McDermott pass on the Tranmere goalie Danny Coyne. Aldridge missed a penalty after 65 minutes and we were number two in league. Norwegian newspapers wrote about Town in a positive way we were in another planet.

Fishy:
What are your favourite and least favourite away grounds?

Jostein:
BEST: In hard competition with the Stacey (Coldicott) West stand in Lincoln it must be Ipswich's Portman road were we hardly ever loose.
WORST: Molineux Stadium we loose and Steve Bull scores a hat-trick.

Fishy:
What, in your opinion, are GTFC's best and worst seasons since you have been supporting them?

Jostein:
Worst:1996/97-we relegated! We lost 7-1 against Sheffield W. We sold Super-Clive and Oster!
Best:1997/98-we were promoted! We beated Sheffield W. We won at Wembley twice!

Fishy:
What is the most eventful day you have ever had in the course of following the Mariners?

Jostein:
Of course the Wembley triumphs. But beating Fulham in the Play Off semi- finals was maybe the hardest game to win.

Fishy:
Who is the greatest ever GTFC manager?

Jostein:
Bill Shankly was the most famous, McMenemy the most impressing, Hickson the longest serving but Alan Buckley was the most important and therefore the greatest.

Fishy:
How many games a season do you get to now, and what do you do while Town are playing games that you can't get to?

Jostein:
None. So I always have to listen on a noisy FIVE-LIVE while I lying on my knees with my head against Grimsby.

Fishy:
Name your all-time starting eleven since you have been watching Town?

Jostein:
Sherwood-McDermott, Croft, Handyside, Futcher- Childs, Gilbert, Groves, Bonetti-Mendonca,Oster

Fishy:
Do your children support the Mariners?

Jostein:
I don't have any children. If I had some they would maybe not followed Town. As long as they didn't followed Manchester U. I wouldn't be violent.
Cloning is an alternative else some fish and chips in my DNA may help.

Jostein Jensen
