Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Council Say No!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 13/07/2000

North East Lincolnshire Council last night voted against the change in planning proposals to allow Grimsby Town Football club to build a new stadium alongside the M180 at Great Coates. In a shock decision the council voted 16 to 9 against the proposal.

With 7 councillors opting out because of "vested interests" the opponents of the proposal won hands down in the final voting. Great Coates residents, who booed Ian Knight Chairman of the development company, when he spoke, celebrated their win against what they described as a threat to their village life. Grimsby Town supporters were devastated by the news that could eventually result in the Mariners demise. The Chairman and directors of the club have not yet made a statement but that is expected at any time. Their is an appeal process that the club can follow but how much time that will take or exactly how much it will cost in legal fees is not known. This result is the greatest blow the club has ever received and there will be great anger among the fans towards the councillors who voted against the plan. Once again the NE Lincs Council, who recently voted to allow the Grimsby Parks to deteriorate through lack of funding, have failed to support one of the town's greatest resources. One can only wait to see the reaction of voters in the next election.
