Peggy Comeback

News From 5th February 2000

Lee Ashcroft will return from a one match ban at crisis club Swindon's County Ground today. Possibly accompanying him will be winger David Smith who has missed the last four games with a calf injury. Smith will probably replace Kinglsey Black on the left flank.

Mariners boss Alan Buckley is also likely to restore Steve Livingstone to a defensive roll, Livo having partnered Bradley Allen up front last week. This will allow skipper Paul Groves to return to his preferred central midfield berth.

One interesting decision will be who Buckley plays up front. With Buckley nearly always playing a 4-4-2 formation, the choice is two of Aschcroft, Allen and Clare (with Livingstone, even, a fringe candidate, on paper at least). Top scorer Ashcroft is invariably picked when fit, leaving Buckley to choose between perennial substitute Allen and Daryl Clare. Clare who has, accordingly to Buckley "trained well" since returning from Northampton, may possibly get the nod.

This would be more frustrating news for Allen who has patiently waited his turn for first team action and continued to score goals, but Clare's contribution was impressive last week (as a second half substitute) against Crewe and seemed to bring Kevin Donovan more into the game.
