The Opening Game Debate
David Peasgood this week finds Fred and Bert cannot believe what they have just witnessed at our opening game.

The Opening Game Debate
FRED:
Its gonna be a hell of a long year Bert. Why did we buy these season tickets?
BERT:
Well it looked like a good idea at the time.
FRED:
We've got Mr Jeffrey up front, Bungle disguised as a bloke called Raven but no-one remotely zippy at all.
BERT:
Oh I don't know. Donovan showed a bit of zip.
FRED:
Yeah but what was the point? When he crossed there was no-one there. Our forwards spent most of the game with their backs to the goal and when we did get close to the Preston box we wanted to pass it in.
BERT:
What about Bradley Allen then, he looked a bit better than the rest.
FRED:
I'll concede that he did at least seem able to turn his players but by the time he did that he was surrounded by three defenders, and tell me this. Why did Donovan let the ball go out of play for throw ins at least twice when it would have been easier to cross straight away? In both cases we lost possession from the throw ins.
BERT:
I don't know what he was thinking. But yes up front we seemed to be lacking. We have GOT to buy someone with a bit of strength or height up front if we're gonna get anywhere. Midfield was a bit wobbly too.
FRED:
Midfield missed Stacy. That showed very much. Every loose ball was picked up by them and Groves faded very fast too. Pouton was poor but I think he prefers to be second in command to Stacy and being 'in the chair' he generally looked a bit lost.
BERT:
Generally! All the time if you ask me. Mind you there was no-one running into space or making threatening moves at all up front. Pouton had no-one to play in. My only surprise was Livvo playing quite well. Can't say the same for Raven though.
FRED:
Raven probably isn't match fit. He was well beaten for the second goal but Coynre was a little at fault on both goals. And where was the crowd today eh? 5,750 and about 2000 of them from Preston. There were big spaces in all the town stands except the Pontoon. The weather was great so where were the people?
BERT:
At home mate. Uninspired and reading the writing on the wall before the seasons started. They can see how we left off last year and the line up was not much different. All this talk of Burnett and Handyside back and them being like new players, except they were STILL injured alongside Gallymore and Smith. Like I say it'll be a long season.
FRED:
You have to give Raven and Jeffrey time to gel though.
BERT:
What like Buckley has given Allen time to gel playing him half a game here and there? No I disagree. We've no tactics or div one strikers we haven't been able to attract or afford the players AB wanted as strikers. We've signed Jeffrey as a crowd appeaser at the eleventh hour if you ask me, and its too little too late now. We're doomed.
Now for the vote...
