Lawrence Debut

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 28/08/2000

Lennie Lawrence will name his first side as manager of Grimsby Town for the game against Crewe tonight. Lennie watched his squad from the director's box on Saturday in the 1-0 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday, leaving assistant John Cockerill in charge for the day.

The Town players will be trying to impress Lawrence in training today, although it is unlikely that he will make any drastic changes for Tuesday's match after just one day in charge. Lennie will also be trying to impress on his mangerial debut and will be looking for a winner. As he took charge today John Cockerill returned to his usual position of assistant manager. Cockerill said today "The new manager seems very honest, he said we will work together and see how it goes, and then after a few months have a chat" Even at this stage of the season, this game is billed as a potential "six-pointer" which will be vital in avoiding relegation, if it threatens. Both sides finished on the same points total last season and each have only one point to show from the first three league games of the season.
