Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

NELC Editorial

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 22/09/2000

The information contained in the consultants report leaked to The Fishy highlights the predicament the NE Lincs Council have placed themselves in.

In appearing to initially be in favour of the project, by not declaring immediately that Great Coates was a "no go" area and allowing the club and developers to commit their money to the preparation stage and then ignoring the council staff recommendation to change the zoning rules, the council went on to dig a deeper hole for themselves.

In what appeared to be a somewhat belated attempt to regain public confidence, NELC announced the appointment of a consultancy to recommend suitable sites in the area that complied with set criteria.

The consultants reported that the Great Coates site was the only site available, unsuprisingly given that the previous consultants said that it was the most suitable site, before the club's plans for the new stadium had even begun, and even the council's own excecutive recommended the Great Coates site.

The council postponed the meeting to discuss the document for three weeks in order to ask the consultants "many questions which it needed to raise". That meeting is now set for a date in October.

The Fishy poses a number of questions for the NE Lincs Council

  • Was the meeting postponed because of the reasons council stated?
  • Did the council need time to prepare themselves for the reaction of the public and supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club?
  • Will the report that will be made public be the same report that the consultants were ready to present in September?
  • Will there be any changes to the original document?
  • Will the council now reverse its decision and comply with the wishes of the electorate?
