Is football a business or a sport?

Mighty Mariner Week 6

By: The Mighty Mariner
Date: 27/09/2000

In a week of rain, postponed matches, and many misses against Forest, the club's mascot the Mighty Mariner brings us his diary from the previous week. His favourite fan from the Pontoon has even given him her phone number after reading his diary on the Fishy!

The Mighty Mariner's Weekly Diary

Tues 19th Sep"There'll be bluebirds over, the white cliffs of Dover…." ah I'm in love again. Karen and me are an item. We had a great night. Meal in that restaurant above Chambers. 'Fume' they call it, then down Gullies for a few drinks and back to my place. I got all coy and said it was so long since I'd dated I didn't know what the form was these days asking girls in for coffee. She said it would be OK as long as I didn't smoke in bed!! Blimey what happened to modesty. All this and the Wolves game tonight in the cup. If I can score against the odds then so can town. We're going to win the cup.. We're going to win the cup.
Weds 20thOh wow. I've seen rain and I've seen rain but nothing like yesterday. The game was called off at 6.15. I never even tried to get dressed as Mighty. I don't know if I'd have managed anyway. I've not tried the outfit on in proper wet weather conditions. Some wag suggested I get some oilskins.. Like who has oilskins in a 66 inch chest with a 32 neck. and size 17 wellies? well apart from Jonah Lomah that New Zealand Rugger player? Anyway the bonus was a trip down to Karens flat. It was really bizarre you know. The place was covered in covered in latex and rubber offcuts and smells of strange solvents. I know she's studying it for her college course but the mind boggled. Anyway to cut a long story short we had a very enjoyable night and I woke up at 11 am and was late for work. I didn't dare tell the boss why though.
Thurs 21stCalled in the club today. The pitch has dried out a bit. Everyone in the ticket office gave me funny looks when I passed by and were nudging and giggling to themselves. Do they know something I don't. It's very quiet around the place. Cockers has took the lads for a run on the beach at Meggies, and Lennie is trying to get a striker from the Cameroons. Ipouha or something. Sounds more like an Aztec king. Still if he can score goals.
Fri 22ndDown the body studio today to try to build up my stamina. This last three nights with Karen has been very tiring. I've also lost half a stone. If this keeps up I'll end up the mini mariner.
Sat 23rdBig day today. Forest at home. Down the ground early and at my absolute best, did the old stroll about bit and shook a few hands. Tried to help a young lady in the pontoon end hand out vouchers for a new GTFC credit card but couldn't quite pick them up in my large mits and dropped about two hundred on the pitch. She wasn't happy. Then to my horror someone tapped my shoulder as I leaned down to help her and as I looked up stood there is blondie. The gorgeous young thing I mentioned last week. She gave me a piece of paper and walked off. I put it in my mouth (there's not much other hiding places on that outfit you know) and it slipped into my neck area. I'll read it later. 16.45 and we have lost 2-0. We weren't that back but Donovan missed 2 or 3 good chances and they didn't. Knickers. Still on the good side blondie is called Emma and has left a phone number.
Sun 24thDo I ring or don't I. It's not that I don't like Karen it's just that I haven't the energy and frankly I'm getting scared. Last night she asked me if I'd ever worn latex underwear and I know she has some handcuffs, but I digress. I admit it I phoned Emma. She is twenty two and has recently returned from abroad. She likes acting, drinking and France. She smokes too. She read about me and wondered if it was her that I mentioned in my diary. I said it was. (what would I have said if it wasn't? Hmmm?) She wanted to know how old I was cos she guessed sixteen. Cheeky tart. What was my name? What did I do? the usual stuff. I told her I couldn't say cos my identity was a closely guarded secret but she said she wanted a drink with me and needed to know if I had spots, money, a car or a job (in that order!). Cheeky little gold digger but the thing is I like her. This is a dilemna. Karen's visiting her parents in Wakefield today so what the hell. Its midday now and I'm scribbling these notes sat in the Rose and Crown in Scartho (her choice!) and panicking.
Mon 25thI'm not panicking anymore. Like they say a week is a long time in football. I'm in love again but not with Karen, with Emma. Em knows but Kaz doesn't. I have 8 hours to tell Karen before Emma comes round for tea. Oh God this is gonna be a tough day.
