"No disrespect to the likes of Grimsby..."

'City' of Fishy Smells

From the preview of Saturday's TV in the Observer

"*Amsterdam: City of Sin* may not sound like a particularly ground- breaking documentary. Indeed, it sounds at first on a par with *Grimsby: City of Fishy Smells* for sheer Dog Bites Man obviousness. "

Spotted by Andy who adds

"I'm sure writer Stephanie Merritt is well aware that Grimsby isn't a city, and is using the word purely for rhetorical effect. She's certainly not trying to make us feel better about the place."

"This reminded me of the first time I took my partner on the train to Grimsby. As we neared the outskirts of town, she started screwing up her face. "My God," she said. "It really does stink of fish."

Fish and Chips
From the Daily Mail

Palace manager Alan Smith whingeing about his players after the Mariners triumphed at Blundell Park:

"I took them [his players] to an Italian restaurant last Thursday, paid for it myself and it was quite nice. They didn't like the lasagne though, they wanted spaghetti bolognese!

At Grimsby, with due respect, you don't get spaghetti - it's fish and chips. And you like it.
