Who will win League 2?

Sack Chapman Says Laws

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 15/02/2001

Grimsby Town left back Ben Chapman who was the player involved in the tackle that could end the career of Scunthorpe United player Peter Morrison, was slated by Scunthorpe manager Brian laws today who stated that he would sack Chapman immediately if he had been on Scunthorpe's books.

As reported earlier on the The Fishy, the game had ten minutes to go with the score at 1-1 when Chapman, who hade been brought on as a substitute minutes before, clashed with Morrison. When the seriousness of the injury was determined, the game was called off, as no one wanted to continue.

The former Grimsby manager continued his attack on Chapman saying "Peter has suffered an horrific tackle and was in a lot of pain. It was a disgraceful tackle and it beggared belief."

"I'm sure the lad didn't go in to deliberately break Peter's leg but it looked like he went in to try and hurt him,"

"If he was my player he would be sacked on the spot for a tackle like that and we will be contacting Grimsby to see what action they are going to take.

"Peter's is one of the worst injuries I have ever seen and there's a chance his career could be in ruins."

Town boss Lennie Lawrence wasn't at the game but told the Grimsby Telegraph "As I was not at the Reserve match, I can have no view on the challenge which caused Peter Morrison's injury but, as a club, we extend our heartfelt sympathy to the player and we hope he makes a full and speedy recovery," adding: "There will be no further comment from Grimsby Town Football Club on the matter."

Morrison is expected to remain in hospital for some time and will need reconstructive surgery on his leg with Russ Wilcox, Scunthorpe's assistant Manager, rating the injury as similar to that sustained by Coventry's David Busst's (pictured below) against Manchester United at Old Trafford nearly five years ago.
