A Sorry Coyne

By: Richard Lord
Date: 16/05/2001

Grimsby Town goalkeeper Danny Coyne today spoke of his frustration after conceding a soft goal in front of the Sky TV cameras and Wales's manager Mark Hughes. "The lads were making their keeper earn his money and then I go and do something stupid and it turns the game" conceded the 27-year old.

"It's just one of those bad times to happen. I have got to pick myself up. Everyone makes mistakes and you just have to get on with it."said Coyne to the Grimsby Telegraph

Apart from the 34th minute disaster to hand Blackburn the lead, Coyne had another faultless game in goal and again saved the Mariners from an even more convincing home defeat.

"If the first one hadn't gone in I don't think the scoreline would have gone that way. I shouldn't have conceded the first goal and that's it. I was just gutted." The Prestatyn-born keeper had been hoping for another flawless performance to enhance his quest to regain his international career, but the timing of the blunder could not have come at a worse time. However, the shot-stopper continued: "We still need a couple of points and we're going to Birmingham on Saturday and we have to take confidence from the spirit we showed. We were cruising, I thought, and playing really well. I thought the lads' character was different class and the scoreline flattered them a bit. They worked so hard. Everybody was up for the game and we did so well and then got a kick in the teeth. That knocked the stuffing out of them."
