Failure at Fratton

By: Fishy News Room
Date: 16/05/2001

In a heart breaking game for Grimsby fans, Crystal Palace came back from the depths of the relegation game and played probably their best game of the season with a devastating win over Portsmouth that will put them in high hopes for Sunday's game against Stockport.

Palace made a terrific start to this game and attacked Pompey from the start and were one up very quickly, shortly after getting a second. Portsmouth retaliated with a goal to no avail, as immediately after, Palace grabbed another and in the second half made it 4-1. In the last ten minutes Pompey scored again but obviously too late to make a difference.

This places enormous pressure on Grimsby who have to get at least a point against the best team in division one, Fulham, on Sunday to be absolutely sure of survival. Towns other chances of survival are if Palace lose or draw or, Portsmouth lose or Huddersfield lose. All these games to be played next Sunday.

This is a long hard road for Grimsby. Gaining at least a point seems an impossible task against Fulham and, unless one of the other teams falter, it looks like division 2 for the Mariners. The next 4 days will be nail biting days for Town fans.

Billo's Verdict:

I cannot see Grimsby getting a point from Fulham who have had a fantastic season. They will not do Grimsby any favours and will probably remember us ending their play offs hopes last season. If Grimsby survive this time it will be other teams who do it for us by failing themselves.
