Question of the Week

Who will win League 2?

Vote "No" for DeFreitas!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

With the General Election announced for June 7th, the candidates are now delivering their wisdom to the people and proclaiming democracy. None more so than Councillor Andrew DeFreitas, a North East Lincolnshire Councillor contesting Great Grimsby for the Liberal Democrats.

In a statement to the Grimsby Telegraph he said "There has been a lot of concern about people not turning up to vote.

"We live in a democracy and I do not think people realise how important it is that their voices are heard.

Important to who Mr DeFreitas?

When the North East Lincolnshire Council were asked to vote on the Grimsby Town Football Club's application for planning permission to build the new stadium at Great Coates, you were one of the leading figures opposing the project despite thousands of Grimsby people voicing their approval of the scheme.

In three different polls the people of Grimsby made their voice heard with a resounding vote of YES.

Democracy in that instance did not appear too important to you then Mr DeFreitas so why should we believe you now?

The people's voices were raised at that time but you appeared not to have heard them. Are you listening now? This is payback time Mr DeFreitas. They say a week in politics is a long time and people forget.

We haven't forgotten Mr DeFreitas!

The fans and supporters of Grimsby Town Football Club who understood the need for the new stadium to go ahead in order to see the continuation of the club in the future, the trade it brings to the town and the employment it provides.

We understood Mr DeFreitas!

We understood then and now how Grimsby Town Football Club is the flagship of this once great community of Grimsby, replacing the fishing industry in that role.

Your failure Mr DeFreitas was underestimating the pride and passion people have for their club and the need in every community for a resource like a football club where people, for just a short time, can forget the low wages, the unemployment and the perpetual crises you and your colleagues on NE Lincs council seem to be in.

The Fishy remembers and we are calling on all Grimsby Town fans to remember too. We remind all fans of the promises made at that time of uncertainty. "We will remember on polling day."

Polling day will be here soon! Vote No for DeFreitas!

List of Candidates

James Cousins (Conservative)
Andrew De Freitas (Liberal Democrat)
