Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Mariners Summer Tour

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 16/05/2001

Grimsby Town have announced that the pre season programme is a tour of Scandinavia beginning in Malmo in Sweden and finishing with a game against David Nielsen's old club FC Copenhagen. The team will fly out to Malmo on Friday 20th July, returning to the UK a week later.

The team will play three games during the seven-day tour, with two in Sweden and a coach trip across the border into Denmark to play FC Copenhagen.

Managed by Lennie Lawrence's old friend Roy Hodgson, F.C. Copenhagen is in many ways both an old and a new club, for the fact remains that even though the club was formed in 1992, it is nevertheless rooted in over 100 years of club tradition. It is unique in Scandinavia, as the club's first team represents in actual fact two separate clubs :

Kjøbenhavns Boldklub - KB - (mainland Europe's oldest club) founded in 1876 and Boldklubben founded in 1903

"Fusioned" clubs are of course nothing new in European football. Established top clubs like Sampdoria from Italy and F.C. Cologne from Germany are examples of local clubs joining forces and establishing an economic and sporting union. The development of F.C. Copenhagen can be seen to be an obvious result of the football realities in Denmark's capital city, Copenhagen.
