Donno Departure Imminent

By: Richard Lord
Date: 26/06/2001

OUT-BOUND Grimsby Town midfielder Kevin Donovan now looks all but set to join the Mariner's fellow Division One rivals Barnsley. Today the Yorkshire side released details about two new signings, with the Halifax-born winger almost certain to be one of them.

This comes as little shock to Grimsby fans, after the former Baggie refused to sign a deal to keep him at Blundell Park at the beginning of the year. Oakwell boss Nigel Spackman is a keen admirer of Donovan's services, who also lavished praise on the 29-year old from his days with Sky Sports.

Whilst Barnsley Football Club refused to confirm any of the players' details, Chairman John Dennis told BBC Radio Sheffield: "I'm sure that both of the players will do well for Barnsley. Hopefully they'll form part of what will be a successful season. The manager's looking to strengthen the midfield, so that is what I expect."

Donovan's current contract with Grimsby officially finishes at the end of the month, and both Barnsley's signings will be confirmed next week when Donovan will be available on a Bosman free transfer. It comes as a major blow for Lennie Lawrence's preparations for next season, when he will be without who he regarded as the team's most creative player.

During his time in Cleethorpes, the attacking-minded midfielder has enjoyed much success. He was part of a Wembley double-winning side (below), which gained promotion to Division One with, courtesy of his goal against Northampton. He is expected to complete the move early next week.
