Surprise Handyside Development

By: Fishy News Team
Date: 04/07/2001

LENNIE LAWRENCE's hopes of persuading Peter Handyside to sign a new contract have increased today following talks with the Grimsby manager. The Scot was reported to be closer to signing a one year deal, although he still plans further talks with Stoke City.

The 27-year-old central defender, whose talks with Rotherham broke down over his reputed wage demands of £250,000 per year, has been linked with numerous clubs in the last few weeks, and it would be ironic if he finally put paper on a new deal with the Mariners after all the speculation.

The fan's favourite, who was kept out last season by a combination of the arrival of loan player Zhang Enhua and another injury-prone season, had been reported as being close to sealing a deal with the Potters earlier this week.

Wayne Burnett has signed a week-by-week contract after having been himself being linked with several clubs, including former team Leyton Orient and Nottingham Forest. The Lambeth-born midfielder is reportedly upset at being offered a permanent deal on reduced terms and largely linked to appearances, after missing much of last season through injury.
