Clare Departs for Carlisle

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 04/07/2001

CARLISLE UNITED have secured the signing of Grimsby Town striker Daryl Clare on a free transfer. The 22-year-old Channel Islander, who has spent all of his career at Grimsby, has had limited first team opportunities in the last two seasons, with loan spells at Northampton (twice) and the Robins.

Clare has agreed a two-year deal with the Cumbrians, who beat off competition for the Jersey-born forward from a number of other clubs, including Northampton and Lincs Conference outfit Boston United.

The club turned down a £50,000 offer from Clare from third division Cheltenham in January, a move they may now regret given that the striker has left Blundell Park for no fee. That offer, however, came during a time during which Grimsby were down to the bare bones in the forward department, and Clare was needed in subsequent games.

"He will be a crowd favourite here because he's an exciting player with loads of pace," said Carlisle manager Ian Atkins after Clare has signed his new contract. "He is a First Division player who has everything and all he needs is a break."
