Who will win League 2?

Jevons "Delighted" to Sign

By: Rob Sedgwick
Date: 06/07/2001

TOWN's latest signing Phil Jevons wanted to sign for Grimsby as soon as he heard the Mariners were prospective buyers. The 21-year-old Liverpudlian told Mariners Net, "I'm delighted to be joining Grimsby. As soon as I knew Lennie Lawrence was interested in me, I wanted to sign".

Shortly before Town came along, Jevons turned down a new two year contract at Goodison Park - where he has spent all his career, despite being a lifelong Liverpool supporter - in quest of a regular first team place. Jevons' chances, even as a substitute, had been extremely limited and he couldn't see that changing in the short term.

"I played nine times for the first team at Everton, eight in the Premiership and once in the Worthington Cup, but in general Walter Smith preferred experienced players and I knew that if I stayed, it would be reserve team football again. As I said, as soon as I knew that Grimsby were offering the chance to play first team football, there was never any doubt what I wanted to do.

"...As soon as I knew Lennie Lawrence was interested in me, I wanted to sign ..."

"I want first team football and that's what I'm looking for here." said the striker, who can also play in right-sided midfield role. "I know that there will be competition for the places - you can't just walk into a first division side, but I'm really looking forward to it. I'm raring to go! I know how well this club does competing in the first division and I want to help them improve on the position." enthused Jevons.

Jevons had been a loan target on Lennie Lawrence before, both early last season and towards transfer deadline day. "I knew Grimsby wanted me on loan, but Walter Smith wasn't interested in letting me go, but I'm glad that Lennie came back for me."
