Rowan to Start Against Scunthorpe

LENNIE LAWRENCE has given a clear indication to striker Jonathan Rowan that this season could be the one in which he makes a name for himself. The Grimsby boss intends to start with Rowan up front in Wednesday's friendly fixture against Scunthorpe, and later outings could be coming Rowan's way.

Lawrence conceded that the 20-year-old Grimbarian has a "serious chance" of starting in the Crewe game a week on Saturday, which sees the new season kick off in earnest at Blundell Park. With injury doubts still hanging over veteran striker Steve Livingxstone, a place on the bench could be the minimum Rowan can expect.

In between the friendly with North Lincolnshire neighbours Scunthorpe and the Crewe fixture, the Mariners are due to play Huddersfield in a friendly at Blundell Park on Friday - a match in which Lawrence has promised will reveal the starting XI for the Crewe game.

"When we come to Friday we won't be pulling the wool over anyone's eyes" the Grimsby boss told Radio Humberside, promising: "We'll play the team that will start against Crewe".

Rowan enjoyed a relatively successful tour of Scandinavia this summer with the Mariners, scoring against a Trelleborg Select XI, and winning praise from Lennie Lawrence in his post-match comments on that game. Last season, the 5'10" forward's first as a professional, saw Rowan make two starts and five substitute appearances for Grimsby, scoring his only senior goal with his second touch of his debut against Wolves.

Mariners' fans can see the dress rehearsal against Huddersfield Town on Friday 3rd August (19:45) for just £3 per adult, and £1 for concessions.
