Question of the Week

Is football a business or a sport?

Jeffrey Told To Star Upfront!!

By: Bill Osborne
Date: 07/12/2001

MICHAEL JEFFREY has been appointed the leader of the pack today with Manager Lennie Lawrence giving him his head in the front line against Wolves tonight. Making only his third start of the season he is to partner Phil Jevons as Grimsby's strike force.

Injuries have ruled out Bradley Allen and Jonny Rowan until Boxing Day so Jeffrey will be set to have run over the next few games with Lawrence telling him it's 'now or never' if he is to stake a claim.

"Bradley has a calf strain and Jonny a sore back so they're going to be out until Boxing Day. Mick Jeffrey did okay against Man City when he came on and here's his chance," said Lawrence to the Grimsby Telegraph.

"He'll start with Jevvo and it's now or never because he's going to get a bit of a run at it with the Walsall and Preston games after this. "We're coming to halfway through the season and I'd like to give everybody a chance. To be fair to him he does look good in training."

"We can't afford to go backwards because it's a very big game for us, and then the following week we have Walsall. We've won one in 16 but we have to perform like last week. We're in a difficult run of games and this is the third against a top three team on the trot."

"If we play as well as last week and work as hard, show more of a cutting edge in the box, we can get a better result. If we can do those things we'll make it very close. If we don't we'll lose. If we give a stupid early goal away or if we miss three or four sitters before half time then it won't happen."

"You can either look at their record (Wolves) and say 'oops', or say that they've got to lose another one sooner or later. I've got to look at the latter because it's a big game for us."
